Jai Uttal: Sonic Pilgrimage

Grammy-nominated musician Jai Uttal, born June 12, 1951, is an American icon known for blending East-meets-West sounds.

Raised in NYC with a musical upbringing, Uttal’s journey took a transformative turn at 17 when Indian music touched his heart. He immersed himself in the art under Sarod player Ali Akbar Khan in California and embraced diverse spiritual experiences in India. Adopting kirtan, the ancient bhakti yoga of chanting names of God, his music gained popularity, hailed as hypnotic and transformative.

With a career spanning over 50 years, Uttal’s albums, like “Footprints” and “Mondo Rama,” fuse Brazilian, Hebrew, Appalachian, and Indian influences. Beyond his solo career, he collaborated with Ustad Ali Akbar, explored bhakti yoga recordings, and created kid-friendly kirtan.

Jai Uttal’s profound devotion and innovative musical fusion continue to inspire global audiences, offering a transcendent celebration of spirituality through vibrant melodies.
