A renowned Indian artist, Pandit Birju Maharaj (4 February 1938 – 16 January 2022) excelled in Kathak dance, music composition and singing. He belonged to the Lucknow "Kalka-Bindadin" Gharana of Kathak, a tradition passed down by his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj, and his uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj. He was a master of Hindustani classical music and a vocalist as well. He taught at Bhartiya Kala Kendra and then at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, where he was the head until 1998. He later founded his own dance school, Kalashram, in Delhi.
