In the Quiet Language of Breath: The Same Air — Trees, People, the Stray Dog

Artist’s Reflection

Vayu, the air we breathe, is perhaps the greatest unifying force between human beings and the world around us. It is the same air that we inhale and exhale, shared by every living being on this planet. The stray dog on the street, your mother at home, a stranger, a friend, the poor, the wealthy, even those we may consider our enemies — all breathe this same air.

The oxygen released by plants becomes the breath that sustains us, just as our breath returns to the atmosphere that nourishes all life. In this quiet exchange, the boundaries between us begin to dissolve.

As dancers, when we breathe and when we move, we are constantly reminding ourselves of this truth: that our bodies, our breath, and our rhythm are not separate from the universe. Through breath and movement, we simply return to the awareness that we are already part of it.
